AI Overviews are AI-generated summaries that appear at the top of a Google results page, above the organic links, answering the query directly and citing a small number of source websites.
You don't request one — Google decides whether the query warrants it. Sources are drawn largely from pages already ranking, then filtered by whether a clean, self-contained passage can be extracted. Ranking gets you considered; extractability gets you cited.
Not every query gets one, and the pattern is fairly consistent. Knowing which of your queries are exposed tells you where to spend.
Two filters, applied in order. Most businesses optimise hard for the first and completely ignore the second, which is why plenty of page-one sites are missing from the Overview sitting above them.
Candidates come overwhelmingly from pages already performing in the organic index for the query or its component parts. This is the unglamorous part: if you can't rank, you generally can't be cited. Traditional SEO is the entry fee, not the strategy.
Among candidates, Google needs a span of text that answers the sub-question completely, on its own, without the rest of the page. That is a structural property, not a quality one. A brilliantly-written page whose answer arrives in paragraph five loses to a mediocre one that answers in sentence one.
This is the actionable insight in the whole subject. You cannot control ranking directly this quarter. You can control, today, whether every heading on your site is followed immediately by an answer that survives being extracted.
Where two candidates are equally extractable, specificity decides. "Typically $1,200–$1,800 and two to three weeks" is safe to state. "Competitive pricing, fast turnaround" is not quotable at all — there is nothing in it to attribute.
Seven changes, all of which you can make to an existing page without rewriting it.
Under every heading, state the answer in one to three sentences before any context or nuance. This one change does more than the other six combined.
Phrase headings the way customers ask, not the way your industry writes. "How much does a building inspection cost in Brisbane?" beats "Our fee structure".
Real questions, matched word-for-word between the visible page and the JSON-LD. Answers of 40–80 words — complete, but short enough to quote whole.
Numbers, ranges, timeframes, inclusions, exclusions. Unfalsifiable adjectives cannot be cited because there is nothing to attribute.
Verify the answer text exists in view-source, not just the rendered DOM. Content that depends on hydration is frequently invisible to extraction.
Candidates come from pages already performing organically. Technical health, internal links and authority remain the entry fee for the whole exercise.
One page per topic is not enough. Overviews assemble from several sources answering different facets, so depth across a subject beats one optimised page.
Easy to conflate, genuinely different. An AI Overview appears automatically at the top of a normal results page, with the ten ranked links still sitting below it — you didn't ask for it and you can scroll past it. AI Mode is a separate tab you switch into on purpose, where there is no ranked list at all and follow-up questions keep their context.
Overviews are an addition to search. AI Mode is a replacement for it. The optimisation work overlaps almost entirely; the exposure does not — Overviews affect every query you already rank for, while AI Mode only affects users who opt in.
Google AI Mode explainedThe honest version: it depends almost entirely on query type, and averaging across both kinds produces a number that describes nobody.
When an Overview fully answers the question, the click doesn't happen. Definitional content, how-it-works explainers and simple factual lookups have all been hit hard, and the traffic is not coming back. The residual value of that content is now indirect — it's what makes you a citable source, which is a different and slower payoff.
An Overview cannot book an appointment, quote a job or take a deposit. Queries with a transaction at the end still require a click. They also trigger Overviews less often to begin with, so the exposure is lower on both counts.
A citation in an Overview is Google effectively vouching for you above your own ranking. Click volumes are lower than a classic top-three position, but the visitor arrives having read a recommendation. For most businesses the enquiry rate from Overview citations is noticeably better than from a plain organic click — fewer people, further along.
AI Overviews are AI-generated summaries that appear at the top of a Google results page, above the organic links. They answer the query directly in a short block of text and cite a small number of source websites. You do not request one — Google decides whether the query warrants it.
Informational and comparative queries trigger them most reliably — how, what, why, best, versus, and multi-part questions. They appear far less often on navigational queries, transactional queries and topics where Google applies extra caution, such as specific medical, legal or financial advice.
Sources are generally drawn from pages already performing in the organic index, then filtered for whether a self-contained passage can be extracted that answers the sub-question cleanly. Ranking gets you considered; extractability gets you cited. Clear structure, valid structured data and unambiguous factual statements all increase the chance of selection.
Lead every section with a direct, self-contained answer of one to three sentences. Use question-shaped headings in the phrasing customers use. Add valid FAQPage, Article and Organization structured data. Publish specifics — numbers, ranges, timeframes — rather than adjectives. Make sure the page is fully readable as raw HTML, and keep ranking well, because Overviews draw from pages that already rank.
On informational queries where the Overview fully answers the question, yes — often substantially. On commercial and transactional queries the effect is much smaller, because the answer cannot complete the task. The usual pattern is a fall in sessions alongside stable or improved conversion, since the remaining visitors are further down the decision.

AI Mode is a separate conversational tab you switch into deliberately, where there is no ranked list at all and follow-up questions keep their context. Overviews add to search; AI Mode replaces it.
The nosnippet and max-snippet robots directives limit what Google can display from your page, which also limits Overview use. In practice this usually removes you from the Overview without recovering the click, since the answer will be assembled from a competitor instead. Most businesses are better served by being cited than by being absent.
Some, and it is unusually well-qualified — a citation click comes from someone who read the answer and wanted to verify or go deeper with the named source. Volumes are lower than a classic top-three position, but the visitor arrives having effectively been recommended by Google.
