Google AI Mode

What it is, how it differs from AI Overviews, how it decides which businesses to name — and what any of that means for yours.

Quick Answer

Google AI Mode is a conversational search experience inside Google, opened from its own tab, where you ask a question in plain language and get a written answer with links instead of a page of ranked results.

It keeps the context of what you asked before, so follow-up questions build on each other. Where AI Overviews add a summary on top of the normal results page, AI Mode replaces the results page entirely.

What AI Mode actually changes

Classic Google gives you a list and makes you do the comparison. You open four tabs, skim four sites, and decide. AI Mode does the comparison and hands you the conclusion, with links you can check if you want to.

That sounds like a small interface change. It is not. The shortlist now happens before you see anything — and it happens inside a system nobody can audit, using signals nobody publishes. Businesses that were competing for position four are now competing for whether they are mentioned at all.

Query fan-out is the mechanic that matters

AI Mode does not run your question as a single search. It decomposes it into a set of related sub-questions and runs them at once — a technique Google describes as query fan-out. Ask "who's the best conveyancer on the Gold Coast for an off-the-plan purchase" and behind the scenes it is separately resolving conveyancer availability in the region, off-the-plan specialisation, typical fees, review sentiment and probably settlement timeframes.

The consequence for a business is specific and often missed: you are not competing on one query, you are competing on five. A firm with a strong homepage but nothing published about off-the-plan purchases or fees loses on three of the five sub-questions, and the answer gets assembled from whoever covered them.

Follow-ups compound the effect

Because AI Mode holds context, the conversation typically narrows: first "who should I use", then "which of those handles off-the-plan", then "what will it cost". Each narrowing filters the shortlist further. Being named in the first answer but having no published pricing means being dropped by the third — silently, with no impression logged anywhere you can see.

AI Mode vs AI Overviews vs classic search

Three different surfaces inside one product. They behave differently and they reward slightly different things.

What AI Mode appears to reward

Google publishes no ranking factors for AI Mode. These are the patterns that hold up when you run the same category question repeatedly and compare who gets named.

Coverage across sub-questions

Fan-out means breadth wins. A business with pages on process, pricing, timeframes and specialisations is retrievable five times over; one with a single service page is retrievable once.

Google Business Profile quality

AI Mode leans on Google’s own structured records more heavily than third-party assistants do. Categories, services, hours, attributes and photos all feed it.

Review volume and language

Not just the star rating — the words. Reviews that name a specific service in a specific suburb give the model something concrete to justify a recommendation with.

Unambiguous entity data

One consistent set of business facts across the site, the Business Profile and every directory. Contradiction reduces confidence and confidence is what gets you named.

Extractable passages

A self-contained answer in the first sentence under each heading, so a sub-question can be resolved from your page without reading around it.

Specificity over adjectives

Prices, ranges, timeframes, exclusions, service areas. Unfalsifiable marketing language gives the model nothing it can attach to your name.

Ordinary search performance

AI Mode is still built on Google’s index. Pages that cannot rank are rarely retrieved as candidates in the first place, so classic SEO remains the entry fee.

How to optimise for AI Mode

There is no separate AI Mode checklist, and be sceptical of anyone selling one. What follows is ordinary AI SEO, weighted for how fan-out behaves.

01

Map the fan-out for your top question

Take the one question you most want to be the answer to, and write down every sub-question a buyer would need resolved before choosing. Price, process, timeframe, credentials, service area, edge cases. That list is your content plan — each one needs a page or a section that answers it directly.

02

Make everything readable without JavaScript

View the raw page source, not the rendered DOM. If your key facts only appear after hydration, a large share of AI crawlers will never see them. This single check disqualifies more otherwise-good sites than anything else on the list.

03

Fix your Google Business Profile properly

Correct primary and secondary categories, every service listed, accurate hours, service areas, and the same name, address and phone number as your website states. AI Mode reads this more directly than any other assistant does.

04

Publish the specifics

Price ranges, typical timeframes, what is included, what is excluded, which situations you do not handle. This is the material fan-out sub-queries are hungry for, and most competitors are still withholding it.

05

Structure for extraction

Question-shaped headings, the answer in the first sentence, one claim per passage. Assume every section will be read completely out of context, because during fan-out it is.

06

Build review depth, not just volume

Ask customers to mention the specific service and the suburb. Ten reviews describing what was actually done outperform fifty that say "great service" when a model is looking for a reason to recommend you.

07

Test with a fixed question set, monthly

Run the same ten category questions in AI Mode each month, from a clean session. Record who is named and in what order. This is the only feedback loop that exists — Search Console does not report on AI Mode separately.

What it does to your traffic

Two things, in opposite directions, and the net depends entirely on what kind of queries brought you traffic in the first place.

Informational traffic falls

If someone asks what a term means or how a process works, AI Mode answers completely and the visit never happens. Explainer content that used to be a traffic engine is now largely an input to somebody else's answer. That is not recoverable, and planning around its return is wasted effort.

Commercial traffic is far more resilient

Nobody engages a lawyer, books a dentist or hires a builder from inside a paragraph. Queries that end in a transaction still need a click, because the answer cannot complete the task. What changes is that fewer people arrive, and the ones who do have already been recommended — which usually shows up as a higher conversion rate rather than a lower one.

What to actually measure

Session count stops being a useful headline. Track enquiries per session, referrals from AI surfaces, and — most importantly — whether you are named at all when you run your own category questions. If a competitor appears and you do not, that is a visibility problem with a fix. If nobody appears, the query simply is not being answered that way yet.

Google AI Mode questions, answered

What is Google AI Mode?

Google AI Mode is a conversational search experience inside Google, opened from its own tab, where you ask a question in natural language and receive a written answer with links rather than a page of ranked results. It supports follow-up questions that keep the context of what you asked before, so a search becomes a conversation instead of a series of separate queries.

What is the difference between AI Mode and AI Overviews?

AI Overviews are summaries that appear at the top of a normal Google results page, above the blue links, and you did not ask for them. AI Mode is a separate destination you deliberately switch into, where the entire result is a conversation with no ranked list underneath. Overviews are an addition to search; AI Mode is a replacement for it.

How does Google AI Mode choose which businesses to name?

AI Mode breaks a question into multiple sub-queries, runs them simultaneously, and assembles an answer from the results. Practically this means it draws on the same signals as Google Search — crawlable content, relevance, authority, structured data, Business Profile information and reviews — but rewards sources that answer a specific sub-question directly and unambiguously.

How do I optimise for Google AI Mode?

There is no separate AI Mode optimisation. Make every page fully readable as raw HTML, add valid structured data, keep business details identical everywhere online, lead each section with a self-contained answer, publish the specifics competitors withhold, and build genuine topical depth. AI Mode fans a question out into many sub-questions, so breadth of specific, well-structured coverage matters more than a single optimised page.

Does AI Mode reduce website traffic?

For informational queries it does, because the answer completes the task and there is no reason to click. For commercial and transactional queries the effect is much smaller — nobody books a service from inside a paragraph. The net pattern most businesses see is fewer sessions with higher intent per session.

Can I opt out of Google AI Mode?

You can block Google's AI training crawler while remaining in search, but blocking the crawlers that feed AI Mode generally removes you from the answers as well. For most businesses that trades a small amount of control for total invisibility on a fast-growing surface, which is rarely a good exchange.

Is AI Mode available in Australia?

Google has been rolling AI Mode out progressively by market and account, so availability varies by user rather than being uniform across the country. The practical implication for a business is that you cannot rely on personally seeing it to judge whether your customers are — test with several accounts and devices rather than one.

Do the same optimisations work for AI Mode and ChatGPT?

Largely yes. Both need crawlable pages, unambiguous facts, structured data, consistent business details and independent corroboration. The main difference is that AI Mode leans harder on Google's own signals — Business Profile, reviews, Search index quality — while ChatGPT weighs its training data and its own retrieval sources more heavily.
