AI SEO & AEO tools

Organised by the job, not the brand. What each category actually measures, what you can do free, and where paying starts to make sense.

Quick Answer

"AI SEO tools" describes two unrelated things: tools that use AI to speed up traditional SEO work, and tools that measure your visibility inside AI answer engines.

This page is about the second kind — AEO tools, AI visibility trackers, graders and brand visibility monitors. Most of what a small business needs is free; the paid tier buys scale and scheduling, not different insight.

Start with these — they're free and they're ours

No signup, no trial, no email gate. Between them they cover diagnosis, schema and testing.

AEO grader

AI Visibility Score calculator

Scores how well your business is set up to be found, understood and recommended by AI. Free, no signup.

Schema tool

LocalBusiness schema generator

Produces valid, entity-linked LocalBusiness JSON-LD you can paste straight into your site.

Testing

The 15-prompt test pack

A ready-made set of buying-intent prompts to run across the assistants, with a scoring method that stays comparable month to month.

Audit

The 21-check visibility list

A manual audit covering rendering, schema, entity consistency, reviews and corroboration. Run it in an afternoon.

The six jobs a tool can do

Every product in this category does one or more of these. Working out which job you need first is more useful than comparing feature lists.

How to judge an AEO tool

The category is eighteen months old and largely unregulated by any shared methodology. Two graders can score the same site 34 and 81. Four questions separate the useful ones.

Does it check off-site signals, or only your page source?

A grader that reads your HTML and stops is measuring maybe half of what determines AI visibility. Entity consistency across directories, review depth and independent corroboration all sit outside your site, and they are frequently the binding constraint.

Is the methodology published?

If you cannot see what is being scored and how it is weighted, the number is a marketing device rather than a measurement. You should be able to reproduce a score by hand from the criteria.

Does it test real assistant output, or infer it?

Some tools genuinely query the assistants and record what comes back. Others score proxy signals and predict what an assistant would say. The first is measurement; the second is a model of a model.

Does it name your competitors?

Knowing you were not mentioned is half the information. Knowing who was mentioned instead — and whether it is who you expected — is the half that changes what you do next.

The manual method, which is genuinely fine

Before buying anything, run this. It takes about twenty minutes a month and produces the same trend line a subscription would.

Write twenty prompts a real buyer would type — "best [service] in [suburb]", "who should I use for [problem]", "how much does [service] cost in [city]", and so on. Keep them fixed forever; the value is in comparability, not cleverness.

Run them in a clean session across ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, Perplexity, Copilot and Google AI Mode. Logged out or in a private window, so personalisation doesn't flatter you.

Score three things per prompt: were you named at all, were you named first, and was what it said about you accurate. Record the competitors named instead of you.

Repeat on the same date each month. That's it. The competitor column is usually the most valuable data in the sheet — it tells you exactly who the model considers your peer set, which is often not who you thought.

Our 15-prompt test pack is a ready-made starting set if you'd rather not write your own.

Questions, answered

What are AI SEO tools?

AI SEO tools fall into two very different categories. The first uses AI to speed up traditional SEO work — content drafting, clustering, internal link suggestions. The second measures and improves visibility inside AI answer engines: tracking whether ChatGPT, Gemini and AI Overviews name your business, and auditing the structured data and entity signals they rely on. Most confusion in this category comes from the two being sold under one label.

What is an AEO grader?

An AEO grader scores how well a site is set up to be selected as the answer by AI systems. A useful one checks whether pages are readable without JavaScript, whether structured data is present and valid, whether content is answer-first, whether business details are consistent across the web, and whether independent sources corroborate the business. A grader that only reads your page source and ignores off-site signals is measuring half the problem.

Do I need an AI visibility tracking tool?

You need the measurement; the tool is optional. A fixed set of twenty buying-intent prompts, run manually across the major assistants once a month with the results recorded in a spreadsheet, gives you the same trend line a paid tracker does. Paid tools add scale, scheduling and competitor coverage — worth it once you are managing several locations or brands, hard to justify before that.

Are there free AI visibility tools?

Yes. Google Search Console and the Rich Results Test cover indexation and structured data at no cost. Schema.org's validator checks markup. Our own AI Visibility Score calculator and LocalBusiness schema generator are free, as is the prompt pack for testing what assistants say about you. Between them these cover most of what a small business needs before paying for anything.

What tools measure brand visibility in AI search?

The measurement has four parts: citation frequency across a fixed prompt set, share of answer against named competitors, whether the AI describes your business accurately, and referral sessions from assistant domains in analytics. The last one needs nothing but Google Analytics. The first three can be done manually with a prompt pack, or automated with a paid AI visibility tracker.

Can AI SEO tools replace an agency?

Tools tell you what is wrong; they do not fix it. A grader can report that your structured data is invalid, your pages need JavaScript to render and your business details disagree across four directories — implementing those fixes across a real site is the work. Tools are excellent for diagnosis and for holding an agency accountable to a number.
